Tips with the time change
How to combat the effects of the time change
In many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, at the end of October the time is changed from summer time to winter time.
This change can affect many people both physically and psychologically, who take a few days or even weeks to adapt to this new situation.
What changes occur in our body?
With the time change there is a change in our circadian rhythms. “Circadian” means “about a day” and, therefore, it is our biological clock that governs our body’s circadian rhythms.
The most frequent effects that we usually feel are:
- decrease in energy levels
- changes in mood
- changes in sleep patterns
- concentration and performance difficulties at work or school
Of course, it also influences a lot in what previous emotional moment we find ourselves. The time change can exacerbate some problems such as anxiety or other emotional conditions.
Although it is something that is repeated every year, our body is not getting used to experiencing so many hours of darkness.
In northern European countries they know well what it is like to live in almost permanent darkness during the winter months.
The lack of light makes us want to seclude ourselves more at home and not do so many activities, such as meeting friends or loved ones, practicing less physical exercise or going outside.
How to cope with the time change?
There are some guidelines that can help you face this stage and make it more bearable
- Try to be in the sun for as long as possible. In this way we recharge sunlight and also vitamin D, so important for our general well being.
- Get regular physical activity. In this way endorphins are released, the so-called “happiness hormones”.
- Take care of your social life. Meet friends or loved ones. If it can be outdoors, the better, because we already spend many hours indoors, like at home or at work.
- If you continue to find it difficult to adapt to the new schedule, go to a professional who can help you find well-being in this new situation.
