How to do a correct brainstorming?
Brainstorming is a working method to explore new ideas for a company or project. This can be used for the recovery of a start-up company or for the renewal of an already existing project.
With this method, a group of people come together to express their ideas and come to a common goal.
But, how do you brainstorm properly?
The basic norms of brainstorming
- Choose the right participants
It is important that you select a diverse group of people so that different ideas come out.
If all participants work in the same department, the results will not be as rich.
- Don’t criticize
When brainstorming, it is important that as many ideas as possible come up at the beginning.
It is therefore important that the first contributions are not criticized and are simply accepted.
All ideas are written down without a filter.
Participants must feel comfortable expressing their opinions.
This happens in the first stage of brainstorming. A little later, the different ideas are then filtered, but still, not criticized or judged, because that can have a negative effect next time.
All ideas are valid and there are no better or bad ones.
Participants who do not like to speak publicly can submit their ideas in writing.
- Choose many and different ideas
The more ideas that come out, the better. Maybe you can set a limit, e.g. 20 or 50 ideas. This also prevents us from having too many ideas that we can’t do anything with.
The first ideas are usually quite normal and common ideas. The originality and uniqueness only begins from a certain number.
Characteristics of a brainstorm
- There should be a moderator so that not everyone speaks at the same time. This person will also write down all ideas so that none are lost. This moderator keeps a register that is presented at the end of the session
- A time limit is defined so that the session does not last too long and the participants are no longer motivated at some point.
- The number of participants should be limited
- At the end, a common goal is presented.
