Back to school telematics

The current health situation and the proximity of the return of children and young people to schools and colleges, has opened the debate on the possibility that the classes have a high telematic component, which immediately leads to the question of what type of computer equipment you have to have as a student and to be able to follow the classes electronically.

Actually, the majority of adolescents today have access to a computer in one form or another, so the debate centres on what computer equipment a primary school student would need, or even the first years of primary school.

In the first place, we are talking about very young children, so taking into account in our investment the possibility of the child playing with the same equipment is not adequate, since spending hours in front of the screen is not recommended and should be time limited.

What needs must we cover?

Basically we have to take into account three aspects:

  • Need to attend school video calls
  • Possibility of viewing educational texts and carrying out work on the computer
  • Protect the vision of the little ones

As for whether a laptop or a desktop computer is preferable, it will really depend more on the space we have, since both options are viable, although the desktop computer is usually somewhat cheaper.

Back to school or college

For students attending secondary school and college then more technology may well be required.

Internet connection

Regarding the first, obviously you will need a camcorder, which practically any laptop today has and in case of going to a desktop computer, it would not be much cost.

We must also have a good internet connection that allows for image quality in videoconferencing. Again, the most basic offers that telecommunication companies provide us will cover this need without problems.

Regarding the software to be able to carry out video conferences, it will be the educational centre who will tell us which one it should be, but it is likely that tools such as Skype, Zoom, … which have already become popular during confinement, will be used.

Equipment power

As for the power of the computer to meet the needs of younger students, again the highest range is not necessary. An i3 processor with 4GB of RAM should be enough for them to use word processing, a spreadsheet program and of course, an email.

As for the hard disk capacity, 256 GB will be enough, we can jump to 512 if we want to have plenty of storage capacity.

If it is important that the screen is as large as possible. It is true that this requirement, if we opt for a laptop, can make it more expensive and also lose its advantage of compact equipment, but you can buy a larger monitor and connect it to the laptop without problem.

This problem will not normally exist if we lean towards a desktop computer and, in both cases, let’s not forget the mouse, which will make navigating the computer easier.

And a Tablet?

The most likely scenario is that class attendance has a face-to-face and telematic component, which if everything goes well will be reduced. Therefore a tablet could be a more affordable solution.

In this case, it is convenient that the screen is ten inches (10.1 in the product specifications) and that, at least, it has 2GB of RAM . Tablets that meet these conditions usually have a storage capacity of 32 GB, so it may be convenient to purchase a memory card. With these specifications, a choice can be made to suit most budgets.
